When our oldest child, Caitryn, went through the ceremony before sixth grade to graduate into the middle school years at LBC, we had no idea what to expect. We had seen announcements of activities for middle and high schoolers, but what on earth were DNow and Ground School and Camp Revolution? We’ve since discovered what an awesome ministry this is, and our kids have grown closer to God because of it.
First, the adults who volunteer as teachers and leaders are wonderful. They give up their Sunday mornings and evenings and Wednesday evenings (and sometimes extra time outside of that) to disciple our kids. Caitryn’s Sunday School teachers are real and relatable. They love teenage girls, and the girls find it easy to talk to them about issues they face. Jeff Baughman is our 6th grade son’s Sunday School teacher. He planned a campout for the boys that our son loved, and he stayed with them for the entire weekend of DNow and took them on a hike and played outside with them until late at night. He has a gift for loving the boys in his class while keeping them in line, which is sometimes tough with middle school boys!
The thing I can point to that made the most difference in my daughter’s walk with Christ is Camp Revolution. It was truly a life-changing weekend for her. She came back from Arkansas on fire for God, eager to spend time in His Word each day and stronger in her faith. She loved praising God with her friends, playing games, hammocking on the campus of John Brown and having time to share struggles and encourage her friends. I am SO thankful for camp and excited for her to go for her third time this summer and for our son to experience it for the first time.
LBC does a wonderful job of providing curriculum that prepares our kids to live for Christ, even when people ask tough questions or when they have doubts. It helps them know their faith is real, and it gives them a solid foundation to come back to as they get older and have to really establish their own faith, apart from their parents’ faith.
The really great thing about our Middle School Ministry is that our kids want to invite their friends. They know activities will be fun and will draw them closer to Jesus. Both of them have invited friends who are anxious to come back, one of whom is now attending regularly on Wednesday nights. Our kids’ time in LBC’s Middle School Ministry has helped them grow closer to Jesus and has given them models of what it looks like to follow Him.
