Recovery

Lenexa Baptist

The mission of our recovery ministry is to bring glory to God through lives transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that the Bible is sufficient, and the gospel is relevant to address the deepest issues of our lives. We all have struggles to overcome. Regardless of your history or current stage of life, we want you to know that you’re not alone; there is hope.

“Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

Our hope is to be placed firmly in Jesus Christ, rather than the things of this world or ourselves.  At salvation, we are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Through this same authority that overcame death, we can walk in the newness of life as disciples of Jesus.

Being a disciple of Jesus is more than just learning about God and His Word. It involves obeying His Word and abiding in Him. Freedom (genuine recovery) results from going beyond knowledge into the experience of abundant life in Christ. God wants us to “know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled up to all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19). Through meditating on the truth of God’s Word and growing in His grace, we can experience freedom from the brokenness of this world and the enslaving interplay of sin and suffering. LBC’s recovery ministry provides a framework to not just hear God’s Word but to also apply it in practical ways in daily life. As a person walks in the truth of God’s Word, they will grow in their identity in Christ.

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” – James 1:22-25

Recovery begins by laying a foundation of all the gospel accomplishes for those who hear and believe (gospel truths) and then urges people to act on those truths and follow in Christ’s steps (gospel pursuits). We seek to provide a safe place for the men and women of our church to pursue redemption in Christ through the context of weekly Support Groups, semester based Discipleship Groups, and Celebrations. Through these recovery-based discipleship groups, you will find a redemptive community open to helping you grow in your walk with the Lord as you seek forgiveness, hope, and restoration.

Three Components of Recovery Ministry

Support Groups

The reality is that we all experience brokenness in this life, and we all have struggles to overcome. You’re not alone. Whether big or small, past experiences, destructive thoughts, and harmful habits can hold us back from the life God calls us to live. God has designed us to heal from hurts, overcome struggles, and thrive in life by growing into the person He created us to be. Each of us was created by God. “God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). When we are saved, God imputes His nature within us through His Holy Spirit. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The Holy Spirit enables us to abide in Christ and mirror His image. This occurs as we understand our unmet desires, recognize, and relinquish the lies that have taken root, receive support from others, and surround ourselves with a healthy grace-filled environment.

Support groups meet each week at different times and locations in our community. They provide a safe and healthy environment to share your experiences, struggles, strengths, and hopes with others going through the recovery process. These groups are intentional in breaking the chains of deceit from this world and applying truth in our daily lives by walking through this process of discovering HOPE in Christ:

  • Hear from God, through reading His Word and praying together.

  • Observe the truth, about who God is, what He has done and who we are created to be.

  • Put into practice, by acting on the truth through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Encourage someone, through the grace, truth and forgiveness of the gospel.

Discipleship Classes

The good news is that God loves you, wants to heal you, and has a plan for you to experience victory in Him. Step Studies are biblically-based discipleship groups. Each group member agrees to a long-term commitment to study God’s Word with a group of people who are also seeking to find freedom in Christ. Through personal application of each week’s lesson, you will begin to experience healing, recovery, and freedom as you grow in Christ. Step Study groups meet each week for an hour and a half, with groups being offered on different days of the week.

Step study discipleship classes require a considerable commitment that consists of daily Bible study and reflection, self-assessments, one-on-one mentoring, and sharing in a small group setting. These classes are also intensive by design, helping shine Christ’s light into the deepest parts of each person’s story.

“No one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood hay, straw — each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.” – 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Step Study Class Commitments:

Homework (3-4 hours per week)

  • Personal Bible Study: the study is rooted in Scripture. Throughout much of the process, daily Bible study and reflection is required. Questions within the study will vary in difficulty and some questions may be difficult for you to understand. Please keep in mind that you are not expected to know everything. A right answer is an honest answer.
  • Self-Assessment: the middle of each study time will be spent taking inventory of our lives by allowing God to examine our hearts. As we move through the assessment process, we will uncover the roots of ungodly fruit (pride and idolatry) that drive our ungodly thoughts, emotions, and actions. Our goal is to examine, identify, and rid ourselves of those things that hinder us from experiencing freedom in Christ.

Meeting One-on-One with a Mentor (1-2 hours per week)

  • Participants will find a sponsor or mentor early in the study. A mentor will encourage participants to remain steadfast in the truths they are learning and is the best guard against relapse. A commitment to meet weekly with a mentor to review questions and walk-through self-assessments is required and is enormously beneficial in experiencing progress in the process of discipleship.

Weekly Small Group (1 ½ hours per week)

  • Community is an important aspect of recovery. Each study will be led by a qualified leader who will facilitate and shepherd the group throughout the process. This gives participants the opportunity to learn from and be encouraged by others. These groups intentionally help each other process the homework and what transpired throughout the week by walking out the truths learned in each study.

The level of commitment for completing a step study, as it is designed, requires an average of 7 hours per week as follows: 1 ½ hours for weekly small group meetings, 3-4 hours for homework (Bible study or writing assessments), and the remaining time is for meeting with your mentor and attending a weekly DNA group.

Celebrations

Victory nights are moments to come together and celebrate the transformation God has done in the lives of men and women who complete a step study. Testimonies are a wonderful way to hear about what the Lord has done in a person’s life. During victory nights anyone from our DNA groups or step studies are welcome to join us for a meal, a time of testimony, and time of celebration—praising God for the victory and freedom that’s found in Christ.
